This weekend, we welcome Film Festival Day #3 — Rainbow Retrospective: A Decade of Queer Comedy Shorts to the Theatrical-at-Home platform.

Revenues will again be split between the filmmakers and partner festivals, and on Sunday June 28 at 5pm/8pm, the filmmakers will join us for a live virtual Q&A.

I now have 3 films on the platform, am running a replicated platform for a theater, and am still selling Phoenix, Oregon on its own streaming site.

Currently, in order to set up a new film on the platform, these are the steps:

  • Add film purchase
  • Add film watch page (with security)
  • Add partners as affiliates with appropriate commission structure
  • Send out affiliate links to partners and filmmakers
  • Update any FAQ or backend coding unique to the film
  • Update backend purchase confirmation and checkout emails to include new film
  • Make tickets live
  • Upload film to our video host
  • Make watch page live
  • Customer support (if needed)
  • Pay filmmakers and partners

Many of these tasks could be automated — either right away or with some additional software integrations or coding. These steps don’t take too long, but if I add over ten films, it will become overwhelming.

For now — before investing too much more time or money in new automations — I first need to explore the viability of the platform and decide how far I want to take this. It all still seems to come down to marketing and customer engagement. Not all films will have the same level of sales potential. The question will be if I can sustain the platform if the films have lower sales. For the platform makes money when the filmmakers do. This is definitely how I want it. I want them to succeed. If it can scale just a little bit more, it could make sense. I do know the need is still real for both filmmakers and their partners.
